Supermodel Jerry Hall is showing her support for Manchester’s second annual 'Pink Pinkie Week' in aid of breast cancer prevention charity, The Genesis Appeal.
'Pink Pinkie Week' kicks off on Monday April 28th, and will culminate in The Genesis Twilight 10km Walk on Sunday May 4th in Manchester's city centre.
An estimated 2,000 participants from all over the North West and beyond will make their way around the city centre in groups of 100 - beginning and completing the walk in Albert Square, from 6pm. Last year over 700 walkers followed Genesis patron Ricky Hatton's lead in the walk, raising over £45,000.
The walk will coincide with Genesis' 'Pink Pinkie Week' when women - and men! - across the region will be demonstrating their support for Genesis by sporting one pink nail. This represents the charity's pledge to 'Make 1 in 10, none in 10'. Currently, one in ten women in the UK will develop breast cancer and it is the most common cancer in women in the country, with 44,000 diagnoses a year.
Jerry herself has experienced firsthand the dreadful effects of breast cancer, after her twin sister Terry was diagnosed in 1998. She said: “I’m 100% behind the work of Genesis, the groundbreaking and inspiring breast cancer prevention charity, and its pink nail campaign. Those of us who will be sporting a pink nail will be showing our support and helping to raise awareness and funds for this vital work.”

Lester Barr, chairman of The Genesis Appeal, said: “Genesis is delighted to be staging its second ever twilight walk. Last year’s walk was such a huge success, raising over £45,000 to help fund pioneering research projects at The Genesis Prevention Centre. This year we hope to raise even more funds to further our aim of sparing the next generation the trauma of this devastating disease.”
Since its inception, Genesis has attracted a host of celebrity patrons – including Cherie Booth QC, Sir Trevor McDonald, Ricky Hatton and Diane Modahl.
The Genesis Appeal - the only UK charity dedicated entirely to the prevention of breast cancer - has helped to fund the newly opened Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre, which is Europe’s first ever, purpose built centre of its kind. The £14 million state-of-the-art project - based at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester - brings together internationally recognised medical experts and will house pioneering work into diagnosis, education and research into the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
Registration is now open for The Genesis Twilight 10km Walk, which is being organised in conjunction with Manchester City Council. Men and women wishing to participate are being urged to sign up by 18th April.
Registration places cost £12. To register, please email your details to twilight@genesisuk.org or visit www.genesisuk.org
